Back, back, back, back, back…..GONE!

All Star Game 2009

All Star Game 2009

The last month has been one of the quicker ones I’ve ever had. I got a lot done, had a lot of fun, and most importantly, I’m one month closer to maybe getting into the Peace Corps!

The brew fest I wrote of was pretty fun. The only thing I would change would be the size of the glass. Five ounces means a lot of standing in line!

I am underway at the International Institute. I have been 3 times so far, plus orientation. Last week we did not meet due to the holiday. While I enjoyed being able to take my time after work to run and eat those two nights, it didn’t help me get any closer to my 30 hour goal. It now looks like I won’t get 30 hours until the end of August. But, I’m not sweating anything because I’m doing all I can right now. I believe I can still get a nomination a few weeks late because of the need for ESL teachers.

The volunteer site is a good match. The New Americans are a pleasure to work with. I am learning quite a bit about their perspective as I attempt to teach them. It is quite interesting, as I have no teaching experience whatsoever. I just go with my gut, trying to correct pronunciations and spellings where I can. I also try to make them laugh a bit and keep things positive. If both of us are choosing to sit at that table to better ourselves, we might as well make it a good experience. I’ve got a lot to learn, but I’ve already learned more than I had anticipated.

What else has been going on? Well, I’ve had a steady stream of visitors. My dad stayed the night twice for two Cardinal’s games. My mom also stayed one night. Last weekend my college roommate Peter visited. I gave a short presentation at work in the datacenter auditorium. I’m glad that’s over! I bought a new TV and a PS3. I figured that if I’m going to be around for another year at least, I should go ahead and fulfill this long-suppressed desire. I ran in a mile race on Saturday which was either downhill or flat the entire time! I decided a couple weeks ago to renew my lease, which was a big worry off my plate. Finally, this weekend I will be going on a float trip for the first time!

You know you have it good when your biggest concern is whether to go hang outside Busch stadium for the Home Run Derby next week or to watch it on your new TV. Summer is officially here.
